Hepl!.....very heavy black smoke and engine sharking

I got a problem with my pajero 2.4 disel, , I got it about 8 moths ago is an import! few weeks ago I started to hear some fun noise from engine took to garage didnt found anything, I was driving around again sudenly started smoking (black) very heavilly, engine sharking so much, and losess his power. callled AA recovery they suspected one of the cylinder not working. they took the car to the nearest garage, but they still did tell whats wrong.
any Idea what can it be!

the pajero is K (92) done 112,000 miles .

Seems strange AA and garage can't tell, still, as said, egr valve is one problem, but, if 2.5 diesel, you say 2.4, not that year !, you could have jumped a tooth on the cam belt, this would throw timing out, and cause the symptoms you say, at worse, new belts & re-time, but also, you could have broken a cam rocker, or, if one with roller on, the roller could have gone, this would still run, be noisy, black smoke, lumpy on tick over etc etc, so, take it to someone who is up on these, or ask here if any member in your area could help, all above, very common on the 2.5.
