Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the only lanes you're legally entitled to be on are Byways.

you need to buy a o/s landranger or explorer map and look at the byways on there you will find some roads have temprary restictions or may be closed for maintance you must abide by offical notices also its not a good idea to do lanes on your own

As Mark says, by a Landranger map for your area, get the 1:50 scale. These will show byways for you. Dont take it that because its on the map that the map is accurate, check with the council before hand or go and check the definative map of the area. This will show the current ststus of any byways in your area.
The byways are shown as -+-+-+-+-+ on the map.
If you find any routes that are blocked, report them to your council and they should remove them.
Also never go out alone, make sure you have at least one other car with you. Its very easy to get stuck and the farmer, if willing to pull you out can charge you what ever he likes.

You can check what number maps you need for your area.
Good luck.

Hi Chris (Newbie) here - are there are websites or books I can get to show me where the green lanes and by ways are in Wales? I would be grateful for any information. The only good play area for 4 x 4 is in Sengenydd Mountain - shown below in snow. Thanking you Chris

There are NO public play areas anywhere in the UK!!!!!
you must either stick to legally driveable highways (be they paved or not), or pay to enter a private site (pay n play, funday etc). Unfortunately everytime a motor sets a wheel off a highway that is yet more ammunition to those that would ban us completely from everywhere. A usual procedure is
1. find routes marked as legal for motors on an OS map, boats (byways open to all traffic), ORPA (other route with public access) and for a short while at least in wales some RUPPs (road used as public path)
2. visit your local council ROW (right of way) office and cross reference your os map with the definitive map. RUPPS are only driveable if there is a provable history of motor vehicle use. also check for any TRO (traffic restriction orders) on routes you intend to drive
3 Consider joining GLASS (http://glass-uk.org/) and try their database and local ROW officer
Above all please drive legally and sensibly
