it is quite common for the egr valve to get gummed up making it stick open which can cause black smoke lack of power issues the remedy is to remove it and clean the egr valve in deisel or degreaser ill do a post on how to do this when i next do mine unless someone beats me to it

hi mate i havent had a chance to do a write up yet i wanted to take some pics of mine when i done it next as it would be easier to see here is a breif explanation
on the front of the inlet manifold is the egr valve it has 2 bolts at the front and to on the rear side undo the 2 front bolts and the 2 rear pull off the small rubber pipe and thats the egr off
the 2 metal gaskets that seal the egr can normall be re used but if they are beyond reusing then they are about £3.50 from you mitsi dealer for new ones
once you have the egr off stick it in a bowl of deisel to soak for a couple of hours then scrub it with a toothbrush or the like pay paticular attention to the valve section and the shaft inside
if you have one then blow the egr dry with a airline gun refit the egr oppasite to removal dont forget the 2 gaskets these need to seal good so dont try to cheat with fire gum it wont work job should be a good one
now if this dont cure your black smoke issues then pull off the small rubber pipe on the egr and run the car like that for a while if there is a big diffrence then you will have to look at the egr solaniods they will probably be the root cause of your problems if its smoking
ps sorry for the breif write up as ive just done a 20 hour shift and im a bit tyred ill try to get some piccys the weekend for you

Is it the one were the little black tube connects onto some thin (greenish) metal tubing that runs front to rear?

Found it, just blocked it off, doesnt seem to be smoking as much althought its a bit early to be revving it up so will take it on a quick test drive up the road and report back!!

it might take a mile or so to clear the crap out the system so you wont really tell from reving it give it a good blast down a dual carageway and let us know

no worries matey if you want to repiar the problem you have replace the solaniods at the rear of the intercooler you will get them from mitsi for around 83 quid or if your happy then leave the pipe off
