I have a 1996 pajero 2.4 petrol, a middle east import, had her about 3 yrs and no problems. Recently when I hit 30-40 mph a loud grinding noise comes from somewhere. The noise carries on if you dip the clutch and coast a while, as you slow down then just before stopping there is a crunch and a judder. When starting back off there is no noise again till 30-40mph. All this is in 2wd, in 4wd there is no problem.
Please can a guru out there give me some info

check your brake pads from and rear. they have squeal tabs on them to tell you that they are low.....might be the cause

I had this on my 2.5 TD.
Your transfer box is low on oil. Change the oil and it'll go away. While you're under the car, if it's a manual gearbox change the gearbox oil as well. If 1 goes the other is soon to follow. If it's auto box you should have changed the ATF by now anyways so disregard the gearbox oil.
