private or trade sale
on either I'd start asking questions
sounds like it stuffed a load of oil through the engine possibly via the engine breather - were you going up hill at the time? Could be blocked drain holes at the back of the engine or an over filled sump.
flashing lights on 4wd usually indicates that the 4wd is not pulling in or out very often caused by lack of use or cracked, leaking tubing.
AT temp indicator light comes on when the auto transmission oil overheats pull the dip stick out and check the oil for colour and smell - it should be red and not smell burnt
sometimes it'll flicker when the alternator is on the way out but the battery and fuel filter light will flicker in time with it

For the 4wd to work perfectly on the Mk2 (super select on) it has to be operated quite frequently or else it gets stuck up.
Most Pajeros (which are all grey imports) have never been in 4wd (Japanese tend not to have a need for it) therefore the actuator rods get sticky and refuse to move — usually after they have been put into 4wd
Driving backwards usually gives the rods enough incentive to free the 4wd — there shouldn't be any need to pull forwards suddenly.
If you want to cure the problem clean the actuator rod (it's on the front diff — the unit has rubber tubes attached to operate it)
