Ok, we all know how important to go offroading in pairs is. Well while out with minger nick on Sunday, this advice came into play.
Going down a rutted greenlane, nick got stuck, beached on his diffs as Paj's do  I had stopped about twenty feet behind him and as far as I was aware not beached, as I had come to a controlled halt. All perfectly reasonable you would think.
Ok first problem, no towing points at all on the back of nicks paj. No problem, whip the towing eye off of mine and fix it to nicks. No problem.
Unfortunately, i had stopped about 6 ft to far back for the three strops to reach. Didnt want to go forward as I was very near a deep rut and didnt want to also get stuck. Two pajs stuck, not good, middle of nowhere, even worse.
We managed to rock nicks paj back a couple of feet and nearly managed to get the strops hooked up when it stuck again. Couldnt move the sucker this time, moved mine forward a bit being careful to listen for signs of grounding, all cool so far.
Went to reverse back to pull nick out and the paj stops, grounded out   she aint going nowhere fast.
Now I normally take a trolley jack with me when I offroad and luckily enough I had on Sunday, I also take a large lump of thick timber for the jack to sit on if I need to use it.
Out comes the lump of wood, all 14" of it, well it worked a bit then got so covered in mud it was useless. Just shot out like a rat from a drainpipe.
Nick says we could do with a spade so that we can dig one of them out. Aha says I, it just so happens I have one in the boot. An ex army spade, not the small entrenching tool type one but a proper spade. Well after about 20 mins digging we managed to get nicks motor free and he was able to go round and pull mine free. Only needed a slight pull and out it came.
After a bit of a laugh about it we were off on our way again.
It must have taken the best part of an hour to get the cars free from the ruts, but never mind it added to the days laning.
The point of this post is, make sure you travel in pairs and to have the right equipment with you.
I may well invest in some waffle boards for future outings, as with these we would have been out in no time at all.
If I had stayed where I had stopped originally and if we had had one more strop 4 instead of 3 we wouldnt have had a problem, as we would have had enough length for them to reach my car with out moving it forward that bit extra.
Oh well we all live and learn dont we
