View Full Version : 4 X 4 driving training in South East?
As the title says, anyone got any ideas where I might get some off road raining? (as close to Essex as possible), I've only ever used mine on farm tracks, muddy fields, etc and would like to get more adventurous but would like to know the limitations / correct way of doing things first. Cheers

You could try the Bures site near Colchester. I dont know if they do any training sessions or not, but Peter Graves may be able to tell you, send him a pm.
Hi there i am looking at running a day's laning in the Barkham area(Reading) If you are interested, the lanes are very easy and a good way to start. If there is enough interest from new comers that is! also if you look at the link for Abingdon that is a very good way of having a go, for little outlay, and I'm sure that someone from here will sit in with you to show you how

Think TBR do training days (based in Harwich) www.tbruk.com (http://www.tbruk.com) click on off road trips... says training but no info... best to ring them. Expect to pay £££s though.
Prob best to contact BORDA first (British Off Road Driving Association) www.borda.org.uk (http://www.borda.org.uk). Click on 'Membership Listings' and then 'Training' to show trainers near you... none near Essex! But hey, B&Bs & Travel-lodges are cheap in the winter! and you may as well go somewhere nice! prob also £££ but I think would be a recognised qualification.
I have had no contact or experience with either of them but BORDA seem the best place to start and offer various levels of training.
Nick.
P.S. Don't get ripped off by the 4x4 experience thing! Some places will charge you £££s for a 1hr gift trip.
If you just want a go off road try Devils pit ( http://www.devilspit.co.uk/ ) £26 for the day (in your own vehicle) I will be going on the 14/10/07 if you fancy coming along. (I've not been before)
Bures is good but kinda go where you like rather that organised routes... easy to get into trouble if you are not sure what you are doing...

I contacted BORDA to ask if prices were were set or different for each trainer... they replied...
Nick
There are no fixed prices for BORDA Training, it will often depend on things like age of vehicles, location etc. however the content of the course should be the same.
It is important that you select a member from the "BORDA Off Road Driver Training" list on the website, we have been aware that non-members may be offering "BORDA" courses without BORDA certificates.
If you need any more help in arranging your course please contact me again.
Kind Regards
David Heaton
I contacted a BORDA member in Derbyshire (I like Derbs & only 2hr ish from Essex)... They replied...
Hi Nick,
Thanks for your enquiry.
The BORDA Stage 1 is £293.75 and the 2 day Stage 2 is £587.50.
It depends on what you wish to achieve as to which is the most appropriate course, if you did the stage 1, ( which is for recreational and occasional industrial users)you can come back at anytime to complete the second day to obtain the Stage 2 certificate, (which is more involved for more industrial users of off road vehicles). These courses are set up for two trainees and the cost is for the Instructor and vehicle per day, not per person.
Please find attached a copy of our current prices, ranging from 1 hour "taster" sessions up to the BORDA Stage 2.
If you have any queries please dont hesitate to call me.
Regards
