Hi
My alternator belt is slipping so I have a brken truck as its not charging my battery!! I have a new belt ready to go but it doesnt look that easy to fit. Is it an expensive one to get replaced. I have a new timing belt too should I just get that done at the same time? Any Advice would be great
Cheers

Looks as if you have a 2.5
I wouldn't put changing a alternator belt as being difficult - slack off and remove the PAS pump belt slacken off the alternator change belt - replace the PAS pump belt
Have a look at this (http://mudlark.info/TechStuff/TimingBelt/index.htm) it shows the whole sequence of changing the timing belt and includes the balance belt, altenator belt and PAS pump belt.

just a quicky do I have to pull the radiator out to get this done? Or is it just a case of loosening the pas belt then the alt belt and try and get it over the fan?
i removed the fan blades myself. but left rad intacted. there are a number of small bolts that hold the fan blade on to the housing 5 i think. remove them and the belt should go straight over.

It all can be done with the rad in situ just changing the alt belt keep the rad in bothe the pas and the alt belts will fit (eventually) over the fan blades
The timing & balance belts can also be done with the rad in but it makes it easier with the rad out because you have a clear view of what you are doing

and is that the same for mk2 aswell as you boys look like you have the mk1? mines still a 2.5td! How many different variants are there of the 2.5? I noticed in another posting that the alternator belt has 3 different sizes for this particular engine! :?
My 2.5 had 2 belts on the alternater, Sue's only has one though????

There was very little difference on the 2.5 from start to finish - it was based on the 2.3 and it's difficult to tell the difference between the two there as well
Short answer    : engines in the Mk1 are the same as the Mk2 :D

I just bought a pajero 2.5 diesel and the first job I did was change the timing, balancer, alternater and PS belts. I was amazed at how easy these vehicles are to work on. I didnt have to remove the radiator and once the fan and crank pulley was off the whole job took just two hours .No special tools are required to lock either the crank, pump or cam shafts - same with the balancer shafts.Just clearly mark the timing notches and marks with tippex so you cant make a mistake. Use a big flat bladed screwdriver to push back the belt tensioners then lock them in place with the front mounting bolts.I got all the parts from Milners and they all fitted lol. HOWEVER! one tip - the alternator belt was one of those really thick toothed types and could I hell get it fit until I removed the bolt holding the front of the FRONT mounting bracket to the front of the crankcase. This gives an extra 1/4-1/2" of movement on the alternator and allows the belt to be easily slipped on. All I did then was slip a long tyre lever (any long slim crowbar would do) between the alternator body and crankase and push the alternator back until you can get the bolt back into the hole in the front of crankase. Then use the adjusting bolt to tension the belt.
Removing the fan is an absolute pain as its held onto the pulley by a bunch of 10mm bolts. The best tool for these is a ratchet spanner and make sure you locktite them back on. The only other pain was loosening the bolts holding the PS pump onto its bracket. You can only use an open jaw spanner on these and it they are rusted or seized in then you will have to remove the entire pump with bracket and work on the bolts on the bench using plenty of gentle persuasion!!! luckily I didnt have to do this.
