I think its from the front.
Its the same sound and feeling as when one drives over rumble strips approaching junctions etc.
My suspicion is that it could be wheel bearings but the intermittent nature concerns me that i may be 4wd/diff related?

Just been for a drive to see if i can learn more, and when i put it in to 4wd it stops, return to 2 and it returns.

Can anyone lean me in a direction?

Have a look at the inner wheel bearing, tighten if poss. If not that look at the small roller bearing inside the hub, if not that look at the inner drive shaft bearing on the 4WD actuator rod.

Or

Grease up the propshaft u/j's and check that they are not seized!

After replacing the propshaft UJ, this didnt cure it, so further investigations led us tio the front wheels.
True enough the front offside CV joint is shot. Causing the circlip to slip off the splined driveshaft.
The rumbling only happened when you ease off at highish speed - hence the reason why putting it in to out of 4sw altered the situation.
Obvioulsy its not driveable so i need to locate a replacement CV - anyone know of a potential source?

some thing else to check mate is the bottom pulley if its the 2.8 i had a strange vibration on and off from the front and it was the bottom pulley its in 2 peices with a rubber sleeve and the rubber sleeve was slipping out causing the pulley to wobble and the rubber was hitting the engine case and vibrating
